Stargate Worlds, the mysterious MMORPG based on the Stargate shows, is finally entering the closed beta phase. On October 15, 2008, the closed beta launches, and FireSky is going to randomly pick people who’ve registered for the beta to participate. There’s still time to register if you’re interested, especially since the full game won’t be ready until 2009. Stargate Worlds is only for Windows users though, so if you’re on a Mac, you won’t be able to play.
Stargate Worlds is based completely on Stargate SG-1, so if you’re a fan you’ll have no problem understanding what’s going on. If you’ve only watched Stargate Atlantis you may still be able to skate by, but you’ll have to understand that everything happening in Stargate Worlds is happening before Stargate Atlantis.
In many ways, it looks like Stargate Worlds is going to be a typical MMORPG. You’ll choose a class, take on missions, level grind and try to find the best items. It also has some unique points though. First, battle is going to be more similar to a FPS than an action RPG. You’ll also be able to travel anywhere via the Stargate. There will also be mini-games performed to translate what others are saying, repair broken items and sabotage opponents. Of course, the races will also be unique as well - players can choose to be a human, Goa’uld, Jaffa or Asgard.
