Stan Lee, the creator of many of Marvel Comics’ greatest heroes from Spider-Man, The Uncanny X-Men and Iron Man is once again trying recapturing that old school magic that made him a living legend within the industry with his and Virgin Comics’ recent announcement of their new partnership.
Virgin Comics, which was founded by mogul Sir Richard Branson back in 2006, has struck a deal with Stan Lee to create an entirely new universe centered around 10 completely unique characters. Lee told the LA Times that “It will be a team of 10 heroes and they will be dealing with personality conflicts, personal problems and chemistry within the team. I’m going to get started working on it right away and I’m very excited about doing something that will be fresh and breaking new ground. I can’t give away the details or the names yet, but I have some exciting things in mind.”
This partnership probably won’t come as a surprise to most comic book readers, as this is just the latest venture for Lee who has already tried and failed to strike numerous comic book, TV, movie and game deals since his departure from Marvel Comics.
Stan Lee, who played a big part in the ‘90s comic book boom, was a key player in Marvel’s downfall, which nearly bankrupted the seventy year old company and lead to Lee’s firing from Marvel Comics after their restructuring phase in the late 1990s. Since then most would agree that Lee has fallen way behind the times when it comes to the tastes of comic book readers, and what the industry demands now in terms of stories and art.
The partnership with Virgin Comics is a different approach for the two year old company as well, as Virgin Comics had dealt exclusively with stories centering on and around Indian and other Central Asian mythology and legends. Brining in Stan Lee might be a clear indication that Branson is hoping to reach a wider audience, namely a western audience that can relate to Virgin’s new comic line. But since the fall of the comic book boom in the ‘90s, a lot of fans still aren’t biting when it comes to new, independent comic book stories and companies.
