Super Smash Bros. Brawl not working on certain Wii’s

by Danielle Riendeau on Mar 9, 2008 at 02:43 PM

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
This is quite unfortunate - according to a listing at Nintendo’s support site, a small percentage of Wii’s are incapable of playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The just-released monster title (one of the most feverishly anticipated Wii games of the year) apparently utilizes a dense double-layer disc that’s causing some issues for Wii owners with less-than-pristine disc drive lenses.

From the site:

“Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.)”

Nintendo is promising that the situation will be rectified with free repairs, affected gamers can send in the free repair form via the linked site. But for anyone who’s waited years for this title only to take it home and find a disc read error - what a bummer.
