Celebrating two decades of Final Fantasy

by Jeff Roper on Jun 10, 2007 at 11:48 PM

One of gaming’s most well-known titles will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary later this month.

After two decades and more than 75 million units world wide, Square Enix will honor the land of chocobos with a special event in San Francisco, CA, on June 28, 2007. The Playstation store at the Metreon in San Francisco will hold the event.

Final Fantasy catapulted the role playing game from a niche market to mainstream.  While there are a varying degrees of opinion on if that is a good thing or not among many hardcore gamers, none can doubt the importance of the franchise.  The game saved Squaresoft back in the late 80’s and has since spawned many sequels, spin-offs, movies, action figures and more.

The event will be the debut of the PSP version of Final Fantasy II, set for release later this summer.

Originally released in Japan in 1987, Final Fantasy has been hailed by gamers and critics as one of the first RPGs to create a fantasy world that captured the imagination of players around the globe. Each game has brought new worlds and characters together with impressive graphics and storylines that have evolved into a one-of-a-kind series with a massive worldwide following. With unique characters, vast worlds and compelling storylines, the Final Fantasy series has generated its own subculture with the release of 30 console, online and handheld games, two CG-animated films and 49 music soundtracks worldwide.
