Spectrobes Collector’s Edition for DS now in stores
Way back in the beginning of March 2007, Disney released a game called Spectrobes for the Nintendo DS. It was designed to be an action RPG with collecting aspects like Pokemon. Players would need to collect cards with codes to unlock new monsters known as Spectrobes. Disney Interactive Studios reports that 800,000 units of the original game were shipped worldwide.
Disney Interactive just re-released Spectrobes for the DS as Spectrobes Collector’s Edition. It is available in stores now and comes with bonus material. The game is exactly the same, but now it comes with all 38 Spectrobes cards and two limited edition Geo cards. The game also comes with a mini game guide from Brady Games. The new release of the game still retails for $29.99 and is still rated Everyone by the ESRB.
In Spectrobes Collector’s Edition players act as Rallen, a planetary patrol officer, who uses Spectrobes to fight for him as he completes missions. Rallen first must find an archaeological site with fossils. There he can excavate the fossils with the touch screen and awaken them using the microphone. Poof! Instant Spectrobe monster to fight till the death for you! (Well, technically not death, since this is a Disney game that is also rated E.)
Rallen can also later evolve his Spectrobes when they are strong enough. Spectrobes Collector’s Edition, like the original game, can be played solo or with friends over local wireless and the Nintendo WiFi Connection. Players can fight friends, trade items or Spectrobes, view leader boards, and earn badges based on their statistics.
I have to wonder about Disney Interactive’s numbers. I have never seen anyone actually own a copy of the game. I’ve never seen the copies at my local GameStop ever actually leave the store. I even remember seeing copies of the game new at Wal-Mart for under $19. If someone didn’t want to pay $29.99 for the game when it was new and shiny, who would pay that price for the same game, only with more cards, now? This feels to me like a last ditch attempt to try and sell leftover copies.
