Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Zeno Colaço recently sat down with Pocket Gamer to discuss the implications of the recently released Playstation Portable firmware v5.0 and its support for downloading PlayStation Network (PSN) titles straight to the console without using a PC or PlayStation 3.
Colaço begins by suggesting that “it gives publishers and developers much more scope in relation to the types of games they can release,” allowing them to release “massive games” as standard UMD retail releases and smaller games as downloadable content via PSN. He also suggests that it opens up new possibilities for the release of downloadable content designed to extend previously released titles.
“Customisation is a big part of what consumers want these days, so we want to empower developers to be able to add such features and deliver them however they want to.”
As for the pricing of downloadable content, Colaço notes that, although Sony does get “a margin for handling the digital infrastructure,” it remains up to the publisher or developer of a game to set the price of their releases as they see fit. “If publishers want to sell games cheaper digitally that’s within their gift,” he said.
In regards to the future strength of the PSP’s game library, Colaço hints that “publishers are definitely exploring more opportunities in terms of the types of games they can release on PSP, even in terms of more female-oriented games, puzzlers and less hardcore games,” thanks to options presented by digital distribution.
