At Sony’s E3 2008 press conference today (July 15, 2008), it was announced that Sony is “getting behind” the 80GB PS3. Also, in September 2008, the Core Pack 80GB PS3 will cost only $399.99.

This should help keep Sony’s 10-year commitment to each of its system alive and kicking, especially in the face of Microsoft’s recent price drop. Jack Tretton,  President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), said at the conference:

“We continue to work hard to increase the value proposition for consumers by improving the functionality of our hardware.

Today, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve decided to make the 80 gigabyte Playstation 3 a primary focus of our hardware lineup going forward. Starting in September [2008], we will launch an 80 gigabyte PS3 that has the same functionality as the current 40 gigabyte PS3. And we’re giving consumer twice the storage capacity for the same price.

Consumers have been gravitating towards the 80 gigabyte value since last year and now we’re offering that same value for $399. Yhis is by far the best combination of memory, graphics speed, power and consumer value of any console in the industry today. This new 80 gigabyte PS3 is perfectly suited for high definition downloads of games, movies and more.

There are millions of PS2 users on the cusp of upgrading to a SP3 and we want to do all we can to make that transition as easy as possible.“

The announcement was made following a teaser for DC Universe Online, a hero-based MMO (I saw Sinestro in there!), and quickly followed by a series of developers from various game companies talking about the ease of developing for the PS3.
