Sony announces 160GB PS3

by Jeremy Hill on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:11 PM

PS3A plethora of announcements were made at Leipzig 2008 including the announcement of what will be the fifth iteration of PS3 consoles with different storage capacities. So far we’ve seen 20GB, 60GB, 80GB, and 40GB PS3 models since the console was released almost two years ago. On August 20, 2008, Sony announced a 160 GB model that will come bundled with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a Dualshock3 controller and a voucher for the PSN title Pain. This bundle will be made available in November 2008 for $499.

This new model is definitely designed to get more PS3’s into homes this holiday season complete with two titles that support the Trophy system. SCEA president and CEO Jack Trenton are quoted in the press release as saying:

“Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value.“

I applaud Sony’s decision to make a much larger hard drive for the PS3 considering the growing number of titles that require mandatory installs that usually clock in at over 1 GB. There’s also the growing size of downloadable titles such as Siren: Blood Curse, and the soon to be released Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty that can easily take up close to 18 GB of storage space when combined.
