Some videogame publishers are reading your Facebook profile

by Jeremy Hill on Jul 31, 2010 at 09:45 AM

Facebook logo A couple days ago 2.100 million Facebook profiles were swiped from the site and distributed as one big file on Bit Torrent. There’s really no real reason for concern because these profiles were already publicly available. If you share your personal information on a social networking site, you run the risk of some individual using what you share for their own means. But some of the persons downloading the cluster of profiles are not just creepy loners with nothing else to do. Some big name videogame companies are also downloading your profiles too.

Publishers such as Sega, Sony and Ubisoft are a part of a huge list of corporations who are dying to get to know you. There’s no guarantee that the top executives of these companies have requested the information from the profiles. The IP address used when downloading the torrent are only linked to the company, not individuals. It’s possible someone from within the company downloaded the file on their lunch break to show to a fellow employee. But it’s also possible this data will be used for market research. People are usually more open on their Facebook profile than they would ever be in a survey. These companies can break its user base down by demographic and gauge their collective interests.

So the next time one of these companies come up with a terrible idea for the game, it may just be your fault.
