Sierra unveils new WET heroine

by Sam Cotts on Aug 24, 2007 at 07:15 PM

Sierra

Sierra announced a new Tomb Raider spin-off Wednesday (August 22nd, 2007) titled WET which is scheduled to be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2008. The game will contain “seamless integration of intense gunplay, death-defying acrobatics and exciting swordplay, framed by breathtaking art direction and unparalleled animation quality.”

Andre Emerson, executive producer for the game, details the characteristics of Rubi (the stripper-esque name of the new heroine) in this interview with Gamespot:

If Sierra is to be believed, we’re going to get a seamless, death-defying, breathtaking, unparalleled game. Then again, these are the people who made the game 50 Cent, which they still have the audacity to display prominently on their webpage.

The trailer for the game looked entirely pre-rendered, not surprising for a game that still probably has a long way to go in terms of development. Whether or not they’re going to get all that sexy stuff together in terms of gameplay is an entirely different thing than rendering a thirty second teaser. Even if they do, what are we going to end up with? A flashier, trashier Tomb Raider from the looks of it.

Still, it’s interesting to contemplate the difference between Rubi and her predecessor, Laura Croft. Emerson admits that Rubi will have significantly lower ethical standards, saying she’ll rob, steal, kidnap and assassinate if the price is right. This will, of course, spark intense intellectual discussion on important gender issues in video games, such as which girl would win in a mud wrestling contest. Judging by Emerson’s depiction, Rubi would most likely smuggle a shiv into the ring via a cleverly designed bathing suit and put out Croft’s eyes. What an adorable role model for young girl gamers!
