According to a post at GameDaily, Sega is happy being the sixth largest publisher in North America - and has no interest in mergers or acquisitions that seem to be all the rage among big publishers these days. Still warm from the glow of selling over five million copies of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sega of America president Simon Jeffery reportedly told Reuters that despite the increased consolidation among publishers in the industry (EA’s purchase of BioWare/Pandemic, Activision Blizzard, and EA looking to buy Take-Two were all cited), Sega has no interest in being acquired.
From the post:
“We’re moving very nicely up the charts but we are also very cognizant of what is happening at very top end of market, with regards to some of the M&A activity,” he noted. “That’s not an area we want to play in right now. We have no interest in being acquired, we are very happy with our position right now.”
The company is a far cry from what they used to be - I still have fond memories of the Sega vs. Nintendo days, with all the incredible ad campaigns (blast processing, anyone?). And I certainly miss the Dreamcast as much as any other Sega nerd. Still, its nice to see a publisher willing to stand strong amidst all the consolidation.
