In a move that can only be described as “unexpected,” Sega and RPG gurus BioWare (Knights Of the Old Republic, Mass Effect) announced their partnership today to develop a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG, due out sometime in 2008 for the Nintendo DS.
Though game-specific details are slim, Simon Jeffery (President and COO of Sega of America) expressed confidence in BioWare’s pedigree. Ray Muzyka, BioWare’s CEO, was quoted in the press release as saying:
“As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we’re committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character’s broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure.”
No word yet on playable characters but let’s hope that newer franchise characters like Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao don’t have speaking roles.
