In a press release sent out today (February 25, 2008) Sony announced the resignation of Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, effective February 29, 2008. Kazuo Hirai, current President and Group CEO of SCEI, will step up and assume Harrison’s position. The executive has been with the company since 1992, and was instrumental to Sony’s success in the European market and worldwide throughout the lifetime of the PlayStation brand.
The current buzz indicates that Harrison is stepping down in order to join Atari (of all companies...) and bring the lagging publisher to the forefront of the casual games business. It’s still a rumor at this point, but 1up and GamesIndustry.biz are reporting that Harrison’s recent comments at GDC (criticizing Sony Japan for not seeing the potential of the casual market fast enough) seem to support the notion.
