Rumors: Ubisoft planning Tom Clancy MMO

by Christopher Buckner on Mar 21, 2008 at 05:50 PM

tom clancy mmoIn an interview with Next Gen , Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot stated, “we’ve really decided now to go for an MMO on the Clancy name, which is big.”

There is some question as to what point in the Tom Clancy universe will the MMO be set in, or even if it will be based around any of the existing properties. Now that Ubisoft owns all the IP rights to the Clancy universe, any revenue made by the company from a possible MMO will be returned entirely to Ubisoft, making the prospect of a Clancy MMO likely to happen.

Yesterday (March 20, 2008), Ubisoft announced it had acquired all the Intellectual Property (IP) rights to the entire Tom Clancy universe, past, present and future titles related Clancy’s books, movies and games. Ubisoft had already developed the Clancy name into a number of hit titles including Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell the recent Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Ubisoft is looking to expand the Clancy universe even further with a possible MMO title.

This year a number of rumored big-name MMOs based on popular franchises including Starcraft, Call of Duty and the upcoming Age of Conan, have piqued a lot of gamers’ interests. Now it seems that you can add Tom Clancy to the growing list of possible MMO games in development.

Come September 2008, the Tom Clancy universe will grow even more with the upcoming release of EndWar for the Xbox 360. EndWar is an original Ubisoft creation and would make a likely cadet for the possible MMO as it is set during World War III and seems to have all the makings for a great MMO setting.
