In a recent interview with Sony President Ryoji Chubachi, he suggested that the PS3 price might be a bit too high.
According to the Japanese paper, Yomiuri Shimbun (aka The Daily Yomiuri), Chubachi said, “Sony does not rule out the possibility of lowering the price [of the PS3].”
That does not indicate that the PS3 price will, indeed, be dropped any time soon. It simple means, as stated, that Sony might possibly lower the price. What has been dropped is the price of one of Sony’s Blu-Ray players (the BDP-300) by $100.
According to GameDaily, SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) President Phil Harris indicated earlier this year that the PS3 price may not be lowered in 2007.
From the article in GameDaily:
But, in a more recent article in GameDaily, Sony chairman Howard Stringer said:
No specific price, drop date or any other information was provided. All of the amounts that are reported for the price drop (usually $100) are purely industry analyst and fan speculations.
Most things said to the press or public by a corporation is not 100% solid. Game release dates change. Product specs change. Things happen. The price will someday drop, it’s simply a matter of when and by how much.
When we can confirm any of these recent rumors as fact or get comments from Sony, we’ll let you know ASAP. Until then, read the rumors with a highly critical eye.
I’m really, really getting tired of various media reporting these rumors as fact. I just watched a report on G4’s The Feed where they state that Stringer said the PS3 price may drop by $100 when, in their own blog, they state, “Right now, there’s no word on just how much Sony is planning on bring the price down, but the move might be announced in time for the Christmas season.” Stop. Just stop feeding the rumor mill with inaccurate information and hire a few more people properly trained in journalism.
