Rumor: Playstation 3 possibly inching closer toward an early “Game Over”
While there are undoubtedly a multitude of gamers who are proud of their Playstation 3 purchases, Sony business executives are not as confident, considering that their choice gaming console remains consistently behind the competition and possesses a negative stigma as a product with features that fail to justify its high cost.
Unfortunately, regardless of the current state of the Playstation, Sony business executives have more considerable issues to consider, if this report from the UK Times is any indication.
That publication’s report mentions that Sony is due for “sacred cow-slaying measures” which will “abolish or fundamentally alter many of Sony’s long-standing business practices.”
Reading those words makes one wonder what practices specifically will see the cutting or alteration-room floors. Will Sony limit production of its Vaio computers? Will it stop production of the Walkman line of products?
What will happen to Sony’s Playstation brand?
It appears that, at the moment, Sony’s Playstation brand is safe, considering reports that the company has considerably cut down manufacturing costs to produce its consoles. However, considering the fact that Sony refuses to cut the price of the system and/or adapt to the rapidly-changing gaming market, the situation does not look good.
For now, Playstation 3 owners, along with anyone else who owns a Sony product, should pay special attention to the actions that their company takes within this year. It is now certain that the Sony of tomorrow may not be the Sony of today.

The headline seems a little over the top considering not only the text of the post, but also the article it references:
The market analyst says, “The focus of research and development must be on software, he said”
Doesn’t that run counter to a hardware reboot?
on January 5, 2009 at 07:07 PM - LINKIs this the best this website can manage? You jump on a very tired old bandwagon like everyone else? The PS3 is on the precipice of it’s greatest year ever, tons of 1st part exclusives coming to fruition, Bluray steaming along with a faster adoption than DVD and this is the crap you print. Ridiculous. The sooner that no vision websites like this die the better.
Next time on your next site try to actually look at the sales figures FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR AND NOT JUST THE LAST TWO CALENDAR MONTHS. Sony has been gaining on the PS3 WORLDWIDE, NOT JUST IN THE US. If Killzone 2 goes over big, and it is beginning to get that buzz, then Sony can still hit the target MS has never matched - 10 million consoles in a year. Where were your article proclaiming Game Over for the 360 when it was getting it’s ass handed to it all year long?
on January 6, 2009 at 04:48 PM - LINKFor ####’s sake man…don’t you people let up?
on January 6, 2009 at 05:06 PM - LINKA lot of the big game publishers made more profit from their PS3 versions than their 360 version.
To many big exclusives coming out this year.
Blu-Ray is awesome.
I regret buying my 360, the thing is to noisey and I’m just waiting for it to crap out on me, I can’t even watch dvd movies on it because it’s so loud.
Oh well, you get what you pay for.
This article is just another baseless attack against Sony like every other article before it assuming this or that with no hard evidence to support anything, other than “the economy is collapsing!!! PS3 is to expensive!!! how can I feed my children???”
Scare tactics folks, get a grip people!
on January 6, 2009 at 05:11 PM - LINKthe xbox cost just as much as the ps. to play good games u need a hardrive to play online there is a subscription fee.and if i want to hook it up to my wifi network i half to buy a wifi adapter. so really xbox suckers u in with a 200 dollar price tag but the rquires u to dish out more money for all the bells and whistles. that is some pretty underhanded sh!t if u ask me.
on January 6, 2009 at 05:20 PM - LINKway to miss the point, people. thanks to 20 years of flagrant corporate arrogance, sony is now in a situation where theyve got to pull themselves out of the hole theyve slowly dug for themselves.
sony has always had the reputation for refusing their faults. for the most part, they havnt needed to. fact is, though, this attitude has cost them money. its vaio line, which was profitable, is not so anymore. the walkman brand, which was the benchmark for portable music, has been leaking huge amounts of cash since the ipod made it irrelevant. the playstation brand, which had as perfect a monopoly on 3rd party support as theres been since the nes, no longer has a chokehold on the industry like its had the last 12 years.
like it or not, this is all because sony execs got too comfortable, and the rest of the world grew while they grew fat. they have a few major divisions syphoning huge amounts of money. sony is huge, and if they think they need radical action, then thats proof enough that something is very wrong
on January 6, 2009 at 05:52 PM - LINKWhy for the love of god why do you write anything about gaming consoles or the console market when you clearly know nothing. Go do some research and by that I mean much more than sticking to the stories of all the pop gamers.
Pop gamers are - People who may game a lot or not, but are fanboys of one system and bash the other. These people clearly no nothing and are following a trend of bashing the PS3.
If a PS3 owner bashes a 360 they are just as bad but they are just closed minded idiots. PS3 owners have nothing to worry about. 17 - 20 million sold in just over two years and like one month. How can it ever be considered as worrying? 360 25 million + but it was out a year longer. Hmm If PS3 sell at roughly 8 - 10 million per year and X box was on par then it should be at 30 million which sounds about right by the time it reaches. So PS3 is on Par with 360 and considering the Price difference and bad launch, all the negative press surrounding it and having two other consoles still selling in the market PS2 and PSP. Okay I admit PS3 is pricey for some but what you get is great value for money and they system and its games are good. It has good exclusives that every 360 pop gamer fanboy will bash e.g Killzone 2. Which makes no sense. Turn it around PS3 pop gamer fanboys bash Gears. These are idiots hating on something because they think its cool and writing articles like this just promote it. I don’t care if your just reporting it your still advertising it to the stupid majority out there. To all the fanboys you aint real gamers you just suck.
on January 6, 2009 at 05:59 PM - LINKwtf…” vastly changing gaming market?” the market hasnt changed the economy did…the ps3 is well worth its price tag…but, still out of reach for most consumers…the console itself is outstanding there is no debating that at all….its all price thats it and thats what this article should JUST bold down to.
on January 6, 2009 at 06:10 PM - LINKfor christ sake, i cant stand video game jounralism anymore, all it is now is a PS3 character assassination.
on January 6, 2009 at 06:14 PM - LINKYes, because we all know Sony might just disappear tomorrow? Fail.
on January 6, 2009 at 07:00 PM - LINKWoah. Who called the calvary?
on January 6, 2009 at 07:48 PM - LINKI couldn’t agree more. This article is total nonsense. Jason Townsend-Rogers you are a disgrace to video game journalism. Do some freaking research you muppet before you go spurting this rubbish onto the internet. Maybe YOU should “pay special attention” to what is actually happening in the Video Game world.
Twat.
on January 6, 2009 at 08:08 PM - LINKGreat article, with good points, and dont let these rabid Sony fanboys get to you.
Geez, I hope the PS3 does flop so we can hear the last of it’s whiny fanboy followers.
on January 6, 2009 at 09:20 PM - LINKWell, well xbot at it bashing spreed again same as the writer and xbot, You know 360 doesn’t have a single games that compare to PS3 line-up, well in the xbot world where the writer is right PS3 gonna dies in 2009, so keep dreaming Jason (the Xbot)
on January 6, 2009 at 10:49 PM - LINKI traded in my ps3 a few days ago… I was truelly feedup with the poor online service, games constantly had lag issues and infuriating drop outs. There’s a couple of good games for it that I enjoyed, especially MGS4… Little Big Planet was over hyped in my opinion, ceretainly NOT a system seller it was touted as. Resistance 2 was pretty naff all round, sorry, but I agree with the Edge review 6 out 10.
I bought a xbox360 and several games (Gears of War2/Halo3/Banjo Kazooie) along with the 4 games that came with the bundle. I’ve shelled out for the gold membership and so far I’m very impressed. Gears of War 2 is a blast, Horde absolutely excellent. (No horrible ping issues or drop outs)
Sorry dudes but Sony dropped the ball this generation. I feel betrayed by them.
on January 7, 2009 at 01:33 AM - LINKHMM.. MY XBOX RROD’ed ABOUT A MONTH AGO LIKE 8 DAYS AFTER I PICKEDUP GEARS, HORRIBLE. HOWEVER, MICROSOFT REPAIRED IT IN 10 DAYS…
OF COURSE THIS IS ONLY AFTER A CLASS ACTION SUIT AND ALMOST 4 BILLION DOLLARS LOST IN REVENUE DUE TO PISS PORE TOY LIKE MANUFACTURING..!!!! THIS LOSS ALONE DESTROYED ANY CHANCE OF HARDWARE PROFITABILITY THIS GENERATION FOR MICROSOFT. HOWEVER ACCORDING TO THIS ARTICLE SONY IS SUFFERING?
MY PS3 RUNS QUIET, NEVER HAS AN ISSUE AND IS A SOLID PIECE OF EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS EXPANDED DRAMATICALLY SINCE I PURCHASED IT.
THIS ARTICLE IS PURE DRIBBLE NONSENSE,
on January 7, 2009 at 02:55 AM - LINKNice try man… I’m getting a 2nd PS3
on January 7, 2009 at 03:39 AM - LINKAnother pointless and uneducated article about things that the author has no clue about. Just where are all this “reporters” coming from? Elementary school?
on January 7, 2009 at 05:30 AM - LINKPathetic ####### article!! U so-called journalists make me sick! ####### useless cunts
on January 7, 2009 at 06:34 AM - LINKhere you had my click on your webpage, now please I want back my precious 1 minute spent to read this ########.
on January 7, 2009 at 07:59 AM - LINKWow this article is so pathetic. Really just a brutal put together article. The author used more sophisticated words to make this sound true and legit, when far from it. When will people stop wasting their time with these BS claims.
“However, considering the fact that Sony refuses to cut the price of the system and/or adapt to the rapidly-changing gaming market, the situation does not look good”
-So when has Sony refused to cut the price of the PS3? The price has been cut several times. The reason why its still more expensive than the 360 is because, concerning hardware it offers so much more. There’s most likely going to be a price cut later this year anyway, so instead of people wasting their time with these nonsense articles maybe they should wait and see what plays out.
- adapt to the rapidly changing gaming market? What is that even supposed to mean? I really wish this article would explain and justify all these ‘facts’ that it pushes out. The PS3 has an extensive game library, and offers something for everyone. Considering 2009 has an even better line up of games than 2008, which was very impressive in itself. We should be in for a good ride.
on January 7, 2009 at 09:49 AM - LINKThis article is pure sensatiionalist journalism. 100% rubbish.
on January 7, 2009 at 11:12 AM - LINKHeres a better headline:
RUMOR: Gamertell.com possibly inching closer toward an early “Game Over”
with articles like these, its pretty much inevitable…
Take the Xbox controller out of your asshole for a second and do some actual research and include actual sources, you know, like an actual journalist…
mind boggling
on January 7, 2009 at 11:22 AM - LINKplease be aware jason townsends ( author of article) mother has just passed away so please take it easy on him as his work has not been upto sandard in recent published articles. the only reason the management has took symphathy on him is his sister loves anal intercourse with all the team members she just cant get eneogh
on January 7, 2009 at 11:44 AM - LINKHahaha! I just can’t wait! Once Sony’s gone and Microsoft drop out because they can’t do anything but steal ideas, Nintendo’ll be back on top again, and the world will be back to how it *should* be.
