Rumor: Nintendo DS redesign may be just around the corner
According to Evan Wilson, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, the Nintendo DS may be receiving another facelift. In his latest investor’s note, Wilson claims that Nintendo has completed a redesign of the prized handheld. Wilson indicates that the new DS has on-board storage and larger screens, but more surprising is its purported lack of the GBA port that is present in both the original DS and DS Lite.
Although a new DS would be a welcome addition to many gaming libraries, sales of the DS Lite are already very strong. Wilson notes that the success of the DS Lite may make it difficult for Nintendo to time an effective release date for the new design.
Nintendo has not yet commented on Wilson’s claims but the idea of a DS redesign is quite plausible considering the numerous redesigns of the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance. If the redesign is confirmed, the new handheld will be the first member of the DS family to lack backwards compatibility, which will likely be met by mixed reactions from fans.
