Rumor: Anonymous developer claims new PSP has sliding screen, no UMD

by Jeremy Hill on Mar 10, 2009 at 10:09 AM

Acclaim president David Perry set the internet ablaze last week after he claimed that Sony was already working on a hardware redesign of the PSP. Perry told Kotaku the new model would ditch the UMD drive which leads gamers to believe Sony could be taking an all digital approach.

Perry claims he already knows of one developer who has a prototype of the PSP2 and is currently working on games for it. He is estimating the release date for the new PSP to be sometime in Fall 2009. Perry’s assessment of a UMD-less PSP means Sony is looking to make the PSP into a purely digital gaming device. He believes the current PSP library will make its way onto the PlayStation Store in an effort to deal with backwards compatability.

While Perry had no problem telling the world of Sony’s secret plans another developer spoke to Eurogamer about more changes to the handheld.

The developer did not want to be identified but did back up Perry’s claims about the UMD drive disappearing from the next PSP. They also stated it will have a screen that slides out and games that can only be played using the shoulder buttons while the screen is in the closed position. Apparently Sony is already talking to developers about making games specifically for that function. The source says the screen itself won’t be too much different than the one in the PSP-3000 model and it won’t cover the entire PSP when it’s closed.

Sony gave Eurogamer the standard “no comment on rumors or speculations” line when asked about these claims.

A design like that photoshopped image about really brings the PSP into today’s digital landscape. It would be able to once again be considered a personal media device with a decent screen size, digital files, and likely supporting many codecs.

Let’s see if sony can pull this one off.
