Robbie Bach explains why we’ll never see an Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray drive

There was even a supposed deal between Samsung and Toshiba to manufacture external Blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360. While we sure thought that Microsoft would have no other choice but to adapt Blu-ray after HD-DVD lost the format war, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division says there’s no reason for Microsoft to consider such a plan.

In an interview with TechFlash Bach gave a few reasons why we should stop thinking Microsoft will jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon.

First he says no one is really asking for that feature. In fact, it’s way down on the list of things the Xbox community are asking for.

Another reason is because adding a Blu-ray drive to the Xbox 360 undermines the main feature of the consoles existence which is gaming. A Blu-ray drive won’t make the Xbox 360 more powerful at its core and the millions of people who already own an Xbox 360 will have to buy another peripheral. Developers would also have to start putting games on Blu-ray which isn’t reasonable at this stage in the game.

His final reason is that it would cost too much. Xbox 360’s would increase in price and that would make its push into the casual market with the $199 Arcade console obsolete.

Bach seems pretty stern on keeping Blu-ray away from the Xbox 360.
