by Christopher Buckner on May 2, 2008 at 05:11 PM

y2k rockstarAfter eight years, the Y2K bug that had half the world on edge with the turn of the new millennium finally affected someone’s computers. Don’t worry though, planes aren’t falling from the sky, cities still have power and nuclear missiles haven’t suddenly launched from their silos. The world isn’t coming to an end just yet.  In fact the only people affected are fans of Grand Theft Auto.

In a post by QJ.net, the site mistakenly reported that a countdown clock on the Rockstar web site suggested that Grand Theft Auto 2 (and yes there was other games before GTA3) was coming to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network as a full download.  It was soon discovered that the source codes was actually from 1999. Fans of the series who wanted to see what GTA was like before it became the world’s most hounded game are out of luck.

The site’s codes had miscounted the date, setting the clock back to 1900. Rockstar has since confirmed with IGN that the error in its system and stated that GTA 2 isn’t coming out for download anytime soon. The countdown that was seen on the web site was in fact, the original countdown for the release of GTA 2 for the original PlayStation.
