Resident Evil 5 impresses at E3

by Kenneth on Jul 17, 2008 at 09:01 AM

Resident Evil 5 has been shaping up to be one of the most anticipated and controversial title within the franchise.  Due to Capcom’s brilliant idea of discussing a movie for an entire hour during their press conference we were left with no new information on RE5.  But Capcom wasn’t going to completely pull a fast one the folks at E3 as they released a new trailer, some co-op gameplay footage, and some info surrounding the control scheme.

The only criticism of the game itself has been that it will use the same control scheme from RE4.  Now that isn’t really a bad thing unless you haven’t played it.  Many fans would like to see it changed and the fine folks over at Kotaku was able to nail down RE5 producer, Jun Takeuchi, to give us this interesting piece of info: “[D]on’t be surprised if at the Tokyo Game Show, the controls are different.”  To go along with the possibility of new controls comes the brand new online co-op mode that will allow you and a friend to take on the new evils that await.  Players will be able to step online as Chris and the new girl, Sheva, and fight their way through the story.

The plot surrounding the game is still pretty vague as of this moment but here’s what we know:  The game will take place ten years after the events in RE  and Chris Redfield is the main playable character. Now how the story goes is that Chris has joined a new group, the BSAA, its still unknown what that means, but he’s been dispatched by the team to the desert setting to investigate.

We also know that the enemies that will encountered are neither zombie or gonado (the enemies from RE4) and that we will learn about the origins of the virus. We might even get to see the return of certain character who’s no stranger to the series.  One can only guess but I’m putting no money on the return of Wesker and from the looks of the trailer its a lady.  (Any Guesses out there?)

Overall that looks amazing and the enemies don’t limit themselves to the simple shuffling of the first few games as they run, hack, fight, and chase you down on motorcycles.  The only way this game could be any better is if it was coming out tomorrow.

Resident Evil 5 will be released Friday, March 13, 2009 and just to wet your RE appetite more here are clips from E3:
