As of November 22, 2007, more than 1 million redesigned PSPs (aka PSP Slim & Lite or the PSP-2000) have sold in Japan.

Originally released on September 20, 2007, the PSP Slim & Lite is a redesigned version of the Sony PSP and offers gamers a more compact and lightweight handheld as well as improved battery life. The news from Sony comes as little surprise considering that the first two weeks after the Slim and Light’s launch was met with the sale of 500,000 units in Japan, pushing it to the top spot in hardware sales charts several times.

What does come as a surprise, however, is that the 1 million unit mark was reached without counting the 77,777 Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII limited edition PSP Slim & Lites from Square-Enix.

Here in North America, the PSP continues to see an improvement in sales and overall success. Now that the Sony handheld has had time to allow its software and media library to grow, it has carved its own place in the handheld market with its wide variety of FPS and RPG titles.

The flexibility of the PSP as a media player, internet browser and gaming unit gives it a jack-of-all-trades feel, making it a respectable alternative the immensely popular Nintendo DS. The Slim & Lite PSP has already received several special edition bundles here in North America, including the Daxter Pack (which comes with an Ice Silver PSP Slim & Lite, Daxter, 1 GB memory stick and Family Guy: Freakin’ Sweet Collection UMD) and the Star Wars Pack (which comes with a Ceramic White PSP Slim & Lite, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron and AC adapter ).
