Red Ring of Death makes an appearance at GDC 2008
![]()
One of the least important but most hilarious stories to come out of this year’s Game Developers’ Conference came from the BBC back on Tuesday (February 19, 2008).
Among the demo XBox 360s Microsoft had in their booth, one malfunctioned, showing off one of the 360’s most “popular” features: the Red Ring of Death.
As the BBCblogger commented, it was unclear as to whether the 360 in question was produced before or after Microsoft started to recognize the RROD problem. Nevertheless, the MS big wigs may have wanted to find that little fact out before, I don’t know, putting said console on display at a convention where media from all over the world can notice it.
But for all we know, it was probably just Microsoft’s little way of celebrating the tenth anniversary of their infamous Windows 98 preview at the 1998 COMDEX conference, where the RROD’s great grandpappy, the Blue Screen of Death, made a surprise appearance during Bill Gates’ keynote address. A fine and joyous happy tenth to us all!
