The grand tradition of pulling the wool over reader’s eyes on April 1st (especially in the videogame journalism business) has been going on for quite some time. I have fond memories of classic Electronic Gaming Monthly pranks like “Sheng Long” and the infamous “Bond Codes”. Nowadays, it seems that most gaming blogs get into the spirit - here’s a rundown of some of the better jokes from this year’s April Fool’s.
Think Geek’s Super Pii Pii Brothers - In one of the better fake game announcements of the last few years, ThinkGeek rolled out a sort of Wii urination simulator. Just when you thought those “Wii” jokes were done.
GayGamer goes straight - a very cute (and totally tongue-in-cheek) send-up of gay and straight stereotypes.
Kotaku’s cake obsession - this one was particularly funny, considering the proliferation of game-related crafts and cakes that pop up on the site in entirely non-ironic contexts.
Destructoid becomes Foxtoid- Taking a cue from the recent Fox news Mass Effect debacle (and the generally… skewed nature of the network’s news in general), the cheeky D-toid editors put together a plethora of hilarious fake news.
Gamertell in 1982 - I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our very own retro-flavored April fool’s, in which we gave you the news straight from the golden era of big hair, new wave, and radical videogames.
Keep up with the latest gaming goodness! -
