PSP firmware 6.00 upgrade offers lackluster additions

PSP firmware update 6.00

I’ve had my PSP almost a year now and I still can’t adjust to how often new firmware is released for the PSP. Case in point, firmware version 6.00 is officially go for Sony’s handheld system. The PlayStation.Blog announced the update’s forthcoming debut yesterday (September 9, 2009), and it’s now available today. Though I suppose it has been quite a while since a new update, since firmware 5.55 was released a month or so ago on the SMT: Persona, Tales of VS. and G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra UMDs.

The changes are fairly unassuming. You have new color options under Theme Settings, for those people who go with the colored themes instead of ones with wallpapers and custom icons. You can sort your downloaded games into folders, the internet browser’s had a security patch applied and Network Update is now known as System Update.

Fellow video game blog Joystiq made an interesting observation about the recent update. Firmware 6.00 allows users to group downloaded games into folders, and Joystiq pointed out that they can be organized according to expire date. That blog speculates that the expire date could be related to a future PlayStation Store service which would offer downloadable video game rentals. While it sounds like a cool idea, which I’d personally love to see, I have to wonder if this new addition means a limit could be placed on PSP game demos downloaded instead.

All in all, not very awe inspiring. If you download a lot of games and want to organize them, or actually use the internet browser on the PSP, then you may want to consider downloading 6.00 today. If not, then it might not be a bad idea to wait until 6.01 or 6.1.
