PS3 firmware 2.42 causing isolated problems
A few reports have been coming in from PS3 owners claiming the latest PS3 2.42 firmware is causing some serious problems. The most common problems allege the PS3 has trouble reading Blu-ray discs and staying connected to online games.
Firmware 2.42 was a minor update that provided improved stability on some PlayStation titles and some PS3’s just seem to not respond well to updates. Firmware 2.42 was released on July 29, 2008 and for the most part users have been happy. These issues don’t appear to be widespread but Sony should provide a statement within the next few days addressing this matter.

“Well this is totally Effed Up!!! My son decided that it would be a good idea to update the PS3 and he did 2 nights ago without me knowing it. Well now ANYTHING BLURAY does NOT play. NOTHING!!! Doesn’t even recognize the DAMN Disk!!! Is there anything I can do???”
“Installed this newest update and now nothing works, can not read disks at all. We have done the system restore, etc. now have to wait while it gets shipped to Sony to fix it. Very upsetting, fairly new PS3 (5 months) in excellent condition and was working perfectly prior to update. Extremely frustrating.”
“Downloaded the update and all my saves on cod 4 single player have gone and when I name my perks online as soon as I switch my PS3 off they disappear and have to name them again.”

Ever since the new firmware update, my PS3 plays everything but what it should play, PS3 games. I can play Blu-Ray DVDs, DVDs, PS1 games, and PS2 games. Is anyone else having this same issue? And have you got it resolved. If so how did you resolve the problem? The only thing I keep getting is call Sony.
on August 10, 2008 at 07:31 PM - LINKI just got the 40GB model three days ago and had the 2.36 firmware and everything played great and then suddenly was only having problems with MGS4, it wouldn’t play at all. I did everything. But the rest of my games worked fine. Then I thought like an idiot, “maybe if I just update the PS3…” I f it were only that easy. Fortunately that didn’t help either because NOTHING works at all. I wish SONY had a neck so I could put my hands around it and strangled it. I felt like throwing the PS3 out the window. I wanted to burn all the PS3’s of the world. I wanted to murder SONY. I wanted to breathe smoke.
if you couldn’t tell, I’m a little pissed. I’m pissed I wasted money and time. I have to go out of my little #### town to exchange my PS3 and I doubt that will work either. I can’t just play games when ever I want, I have work and school and MGS4 releases some stress and I also love the series and have been waiting to play it forever and now I can’t even finish the damn game. ####! THANKS A LOT SONY, THANKS A LOT KONAMI, #### YOU!!
I completely formated and restored the PS3 and still nothing. When you do that, it doesn’t get rid of the update. Thats why people still had problems even after you format everything. Formating doesn’t work, what a surprise. What the #### is the point in updates if they aren’t going to work. My Wii never has problems at all. Maybe it’s because the PS3 is more of a computer than it is a console. Why can’t things just work.

on August 19, 2008 at 06:00 PM - LINKI just got my 1st ps3 yesterday 40gb white console NTSC/J i updated it thru wi fi connection it takes about an hour and half to complete update progress then it stopped responding it still stuck and getting the msg Connect controller to USB cable and then press ps button and that’s all

I had a 40G ps3 and i was the happiest man ever alive on earth COD4-MGS4-GTAIV and more, all until i updated my system with firmware 2.42 and was perfectly fine for a few days when suddenly i was playing online and the game completly froze & my system restarted by its self. My reacction was “ok! wtf??” i went to try to play it again once my ps3 was on and running and it gave me the death sentence #‘s. ever since then it didn’t want to read any blue ray discs but my media was fine.
I called sony and they wanted me to shipp it 2 them. I was so frustrated bcuz when i come home from work thats where i kill my time when i don’t have nothing else to do. SONY said it’ll take about 7-10 business days for them to fix it if its fixed and ship it back.
Well i had warranty on my ps3 so i was too desperate. Went to best buy and got a new one.
AFTER READING ALL OF YOU;S COMMENTS I THO ABOUT UPDATING TO 2.42 FIRMWARE BUT RATHER NOT UNTIL THIS PROBLEM WITH THE UPDATE GETS SOLVE.
I HATE IT WHEN IM NOT UP TO DATE WITH THESE THINGS BUT IN THIS CASE I THINK IS A SMART MOVE. WELL GOOD LUCK AND MY ANSWER TO ALL OF YOU WOULD BE ****GET A NEW ONE *** IF YOU HAVE GUARANTY WHY NOT!! :)
