Prototype’s multiplayer mode scrapped

by Pulkit Chandna on Mar 31, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Prototype
Prototype, a much-hyped and much-anticipated game being developed by Radical Entertainment, will not feature any online multiplayer. The unfortunate news comes from Radical’s Tim Bennison who spoke with Team Xbox. Previously, the game was supposed to have online multiplayer functionality but it has been scrapped as the developers found it difficult to integrate it.

Bennison said they had envisaged Prototype as a single-player game but the shape-shifting prowess of the game’s protagonist, Alex, prompted them to integrate an online co-op multiplayer mode.  Tthe developers soon realized that they couldn’t quite pull it off in the way they planned. “Our conclusion is that we won’t be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story,” Bennison explained.

Bennison hasn’t ruled out the possibility of multiplayer features as part of future downloadable content. The game is being developed for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Prototype features a free-to-roam world a la Grand Theft Auto, with the game’s protagonist Alex having shape-shifting powers. Prototype will be the first game to feature Neural-THX 7.1 surround sound. It is scheduled for a summer 2008 release. The game’s publisher Sierra has plans to turn the game into a franchise.
