Mirror’s Edge is a game I described in a previous article as a first-person shooter without any shooting but I was wrong about that. There is some shooting but it isn’t the sole action in the game which helps make Mirror’s Edge different.
You play as Faith as if you are totally in her shoes as she climbs, jumps, scales and slides over and in buildings in a way that would make Trinity from The Matrix envious. Mirror’s Edge‘s first-person point of view makes the player feel like he or she is truly in the midst of the action.
Faith lives in a world where information is trafficked so heavily that anything valuable cannot be sent via email. Instead, certain couriers like Faith are sent to physically carry information despite impossible odds.
You have to wonder how the future world of Mirror’s Edge could have become like this and I’m certain that makes the game all the more interesting. I have to admire the fact that even though the world of Mirror’s Edge is an obvious dystopia, the game has a lighter tone. In other words, Faith could have been jumping on Blade Runner-like buildings with eternal night skies but the game has a very contemporary cityscape with a blue skies and happy days.
This unique tone reminds me of the Aerosmith song “Living on the Edge” with the lyrics, “There’s something wrong with the world today, I don’t know what it is.” I suppose players will find out when Mirror’s Edge comes out later this year for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms.
