Pokemon Battle Revolution comes bearing mystery gifts

For a long time, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl owners have been yearning to use the “Mystery Gift” menu option. Finally, Nintendo will give them ample opportunity to do so. Unfortunately, you need a Wii, a copy of Pokemon Battle Revolution, a DS, one of the DS games and about fifteen to twenty minutes to unlock the mystery gift. First you visit the Pokemon Battle Revolution: Mystery Gift site. You complete the four challenges, and then the secret code to unlock the special gift is revealed. Apparently this won’t be the first “Mystery Gift” pokemon, as the site has a countdown clock to a second gift. The first gift is described as a “Shocking Secret Gift” and the second, which will be available in eight days, is described as a “Heated Secret Gift.”
Its a bit of a challenge to unlock the code. First of all, you must complete four mini-games. The first is exceedingly simple. You simply click pokeballs in the correct order. You can attempt this as many times as you like. Next up is what I like to call the Piplup shuffle, where there are three pokeballs and a Piplup pokemon. The Piplup is inside one of the three, and you must find it three times. After that is the slide puzzle, which I found most annoying. The instructions say to complete it in as few clicks as possible, but apparently that doesn’t mean anything. It took me 98 clicks and it still let me proceed to the final challenge. The last puzzle is pokemon sudoku. You have nine pokemon which you must arrange on the grid to solve the puzzle.
After all this is solved, you are rewarded with a code for an exclusive Electivire pokemon. The code page provides instructions for entering the code in Pokemon Battle Revolution and sending it to your DS copy of Pokemon. Apparently the code isn’t a ‘one-time use’ sort of thing, as the instructions on the page make reference to how you could share it with others if you really wanted to.
Its a nice idea, but it feels like a bit of a rip off to me. I don’t have a Wii, but I’d like an exclusive Electrovire. None of my friends who do have Wiis have Pokemon Battle Revolution, so I’m out of luck. It seems a bit insensitive of Nintendo to only provide a special bonus to people who can afford to have all the systems and games. Bet you next week the “Mystery Gift” is a Magmortar.

Nintendo has been criticized that the Wii and DS have not had much of a symbiotic mix, and it is slowly being rectified with events such as this. The code can be used numerous times, so sharing it or trading the Electrovire are options. Both the Electrovire and Magmortar are not too rare. If there is a “will” for someone to acquire these Pokemon, then they will find a way. This is just the next natural step in brining the events to the neighborhood level. Finally, the mini-games can b skipped altogether, but that takes all the fun out of it.

That is true that this does take a step towards making a connection between the two games, and that people who really want the ‘special’ characters will find a way.
I kind of liked the mini-games. :D Except for the slide puzzle. The slide puzzle is evil. XD
on February 29, 2008 at 01:30 PM - LINKIT IS KIND OF UNFAIR BUT ITS ONLY A WAY TO MAKE MONEY BY REQUIRING THE PLAYERS TO GO BUY GAMES MADE BY THE COMPANY TO GET A MYTERY GIFT IS A GREAT WAY TO PROMOTE A PRODUCT
on March 5, 2008 at 09:46 PM - LINKThat is very true DJ DRAMMA. It is a good way for Nintendo to promote Wii-DS connectivity and boost awareness.
on March 5, 2008 at 10:45 PM - LINKWhile exceedingly annoying to do, it is possible to get both Magmortar and Electrivire in both Diamond and Pearl without using this method, so it’s not that unfair.

That’s good to know Sairus. It just seems irritating to have to go through such steps when others can get the special two through simpler means.
