PSN movie download service

At the time of this writing (10:47p.m. CT, July 15, 2008), I'm checking out the newly released Playstation movie download store as promised by Jack Trenton during Sony’s E3 press conference earlier today. I must say the store has launched with an impressive number of titles. You can download both movies and television shows. Everything is broken down into genre categories. You can also search for titles alphabetically.

One of the first things I’ve noticed was the tabs that direct you to titles that can be rented or purchased. Sixty-five movies from the action/adventure genre are up and ready to rent. Some of the movies available to rent are 10,000 BC, Juno, Hitman, and Rocky series to just name a fraction. The rental prices seem to ranged from $2.99 for the SD version to $4.99 for the HD version. HD movies are in abundance for launch. I’ve counted a total of 53 different titles in glorious high definition. At this time there doesn’t seem to be an option for purchasing the high def movies to keep.

On the purchasing side of the store there are ninety six movie titles to own. These are numbers are also based off the action/adventure genre. There could be more movies than this if the genres don’t cross over. One of the more recent titles featured is Cloverfield. You can purchase this film in SD for $14.99. Older movies such as Die Hard and Reservoir Dogs cost $9.99.

The video store also provides television shows and anime. The entire first season of Afro Samurai is available by episode. There are twenty two episodes total priced at $1.99 each. There’s also seasons 1 and 2 of Astro Boy and the first season of Samurai 7. Currently there are twelve shows to choose from. They all seem to go for two bucks a pop. Finally eleven networks are currently supporting the video store for television. Seasons 1 and 2 of the hit show 24 caught my eye first. They also are priced at $1.99. There’s also Futurama, Miami Ink, Prison Break, American Chopper, Robot Chicken, Family Guy, and countess other shows available. I thought Robot Chicken would cost less because the episodes are only fifteen minutes, but that’s not the case. It’s still great to see it on there.

This is a wonderful start for Sony to bring more entertainment into the living room. There’s certainly something for everyone here. I’m going to pick out something to download and hope that everything plays just as smoothly as the interface moved.
