The Facebook Scrabble open beta from the EA/Hasbro partnership officially launched yesterday (July 14, 2008). Frustrated by the fan-ripoffs, the official version was created and released, and now more Hasbro games are planned. Scrabble is the first social networking site version of an EA/Hasbro game, but not the last, as the companies have more games planned.
Scrabble is only for US and Canadian users, and allows them to play the classic board game with friends or strangers. You create a game, then it begins in real-time. If you created a friends-only game and your friends aren’t also online, you can make your move, sign off and hope they visited to take their turn when you next log on. It also has a chat function, past moves list and dictionary built in as well. When you’re not playing, you can check and see how your score ranks among all the other users.
I was a little disappointed with the open beta version of Scrabble. The game looks great, and the controls are fine. Its fun, if you have friends who you know will add it and visit a lot. I just wish they had a single player mode, where you could play against a computer, since the turn-based version played among friends could take a while to complete if everyone isn’t online.
