Today (May 21, 2008) marks the release of the first episode of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness. The episodic gaming series is available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux from Greenhouse, or via Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360.
The game follows the stars of Penny Arcade, Tycho Brahe and Jonathan Gabriel, who work as paranormal investigators for the Startling Developments detective agency. Set in the fictional 1920s town of New Arcadia, OTRSPOD merges point-and-click adventure sensibilities with the turn-based battles and customization of a traditional RPG.
Players create their own character who will join Brahe and Gabriel on their adventure and can then transfer that character to future episodes. The game was developed by Hothead Games and features the artwork and writing of Penny Arcade creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahluik.
If you want to get a taste for the game, you can download the free demo, which takes players through the first section of the game. A giant mechanical juicer (correct term is NSFW) has just destroyed your home and you set off after it in order to get your revenge. This area acts mostly as a tutorial that introduces you to both the game mechanics, as well as the initial characters and story.
From what I’ve played so far, fans of the web comic will definitely find themselves right at home with this game. It features all of the trademark humor from the strip, but puts it in a new and interesting, steam-punk, Victorian setting.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2’s many imperfections, like laws you might unintentionally break, a flawed recruiting system, recycled characters and new MP system have made me realize I want nothing to do with the game.
