Pedophiles hunting kids in online gaming

by Pulkit Chandna on Feb 14, 2008 at 03:56 PM

Predators target kids on online gaming services
Sexual predators have turned to game consoles for entrapping gullible children as online gaming services like Xbox Live allow gamers to freely communicate with each other. According to a story on WLWT-TV News 5 in Cincinnati, OH, the FBI has investigated many such cases in Southern Ohio.

Law enforcement agencies have been hunting down predators in cyberspace for many years with some success. Now predators have started to migrate from computers to video games as there is myriad kids who populate these online gaming services. Sadly enough for the nefarious predators, investigators are wide awake to their migration to video games.

Lt. Jeff Barley of Hamilton Township Police told News 5, “Where are the children at? That’s where we’re going to go; that’s where we’re going to find them.” However, many parents might still be in the dark about pedophiles posing as amiable gamers. As one parent was quoted in the report, “We were at first, unaware, of the connection with other people and how vast it was.”

Investigators told News 5 that a 30-year-old Dayton woman exchanged nude pictures with a 16-year-old boy using the Xbox 360. The investigators advised parents to forge an honest relationship with their children and understand that playing games online exposes them (no pun intended) to many different types of people.

  • Nice article. I’m in agreement 100%. Pedophiles are the lowest form of life on the planet. To steal a child’s innocence is the worst thing I can imagine. :( I advocate even stronger reaction. Vigilantism. It’s strange, but I wrote a book completely ANTI-pedophile and you know how many publishers will consider it? Exactly none that I’ve reached. Nobody will touch it. There’s something wrong with that as well - if we don’t publicize ANTI pedophilia books and efforts just because it deals with a subject we’d rather igore - that’s wrong. Pedophiles in Thailand? You bet… Thanks for a great article, Mike.

@ Mike: Well, I believe instead of an anti-pedophile book you can perhaps explore the idea of writing a book that educates parents and kids about pedophiles and how to effectively counter them (maybe, your book already covers it). I can understand your frustration. Publishers generally don’t want to touch manuscripts concerning such issues as they don’t seem financially viable to them. If you are passionate about the issue, then try self-publishing it if you can.

My parent’s will NOT let me on any online games, i only play them because they are fun, i have very limited experiences as a kid, and this bugs me, they don’t trust me and will not allow me on any such games at all costs.
i hate this, and i’ve tried talking to them, it ends in fights and other such crap. they hardly ever let me take a phone call without listening in on my conversations. Im no idiot. I don’t talk to strangers, i’ve already made the mistake twice, being stupid and imature a pedophile tried to talk me into falling in love, that’s stupid. i played along for a bit once i figured it out, testing my theories to see if i was right, when i told my parents about this, they were outraged and smashed all my electronics. HOW IS THIS FAIR?!
