Overlooked themes in games

by Danielle Riendeau on Jan 5, 2010 at 11:36 AM

Upon reading this Kotaku piece on gaming’s next “hot destination”, I decided to throw on my thinking cap and come up with a few new ideas for game themes. While the piece in question deals with places - I’m all about historical periods and interesting events. That’s right, kids - it’s time to play with history!
Vikings!
Vikings:
Ok, so this is sort of hinted at in the Kotaku article, but imagine how cool it would be to play as a total badass viking warrior, either in a God of War style game or a more strategy-oriented title. You could pillage and plow through little defenseless villages and get back in your boat just in time for drinking songs! Heck, I could even go for a modern re-imagining of SNES classic The Lost Vikings.

Astronauts:
I’m not talking about bald space marines - what about a game based on the Apollo astronauts (or even future space missions). I’m thinking something sim-y with plenty of action sequences and high-flying adventure.

1960s Woodstock:
Just imagine how cool this would be - a music game (think Rock Band) with open world elements that would allow you to futz around and rub shoulders with music greats and awesome hippies. I’m so there.

Ok, so now that the creative juices are flowing - what do you think, readers? Any cool time periods or historic events you’d like to play in?
