Empire is a beautifully horrific book that had been rumored to become a new game from Chair Entertainment. That rumor was confirmed by Card in the Afterword and Acknowledgments of the book. The premise of the future game and the current book is quite simple: The United States has spread too far, too quickly and has been ignoring the will of the people. Discontent citizens start unraveling the fabric of the nation, causing the US to fall into an all-out civil war.
There really isn’t much in the way of details released about the game thus far but the book sets itself up fairly well for a FPS game in the style of Rainbow Six: Las Vegas or Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter. However, the book and game will feature multiple installments as revealed by both Card and Donald Mustard of Chair Entertainment in a YouTube video titled “Orson Scott Card discusses his book, Empire see the video below).
For those of you who love the epic nature of Card’s writing, Empire is well worth your time. For those who might be interested in the game, keep your ear to the ground and try to hear what murmurs may come through regarding this potential game franchise.
The book features some of Card’s best and most urgent writing, rivaling that of Ender’s Game and the books that followed. Major Rueben Malich and Captain Coleman are the definition of patriotism, willing to sacrifice themselves for an ideal America and fight any enemies of the nation both within and without. Their heroic struggle to preserve America in the tumultuous times that they are thrust into is both inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. Malich and Coleman are heroes that dwarf the effectiveness of his memorable characters like Ender and “Bean” due to the timeliness of the story.
