Original Xbox games with original flaws
Just recently Microsoft announced it was launching a service through Xbox Live that will allow users to download titles from the original Xbox to their consoles. Apparently all the games Microsoft is offering at the moment through their new service, called Xbox Originals, have flaws. The issues range from choppy graphics and sound glitches to complete crashes.
Any extra content that the original games had like demos or trailers will not be supported and selecting any of those will result in a crash that will require a reboot of the Xbox 360 console. These glitches, excluding the ones regarding the demos and extra stuff, appeared on the original discs, so they weren’t introduced by this new service.
Here are the issues for each specific title:
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge: There is some minor flickering at the top of the screen that happens very rarely. The “Press A to Continue” message is missing when the host player leaves a multiplayer game. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)
- Fable: There are some random bursts of audio static and some minor texture issues and a short hang up when removing tattoos. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)
- Fuzion Frenzy: There are some minor frame rate issues. Additional content within the game (such as demos & trailers) are not supported and selecting those options may result in crashing the game (requiring a restart of the console)
- Halo: There are some very mild frame rate drops.
- Psychonauts: HDMI 720p is not supported for PAL users. Running the game in 720p over HDMI will result in the game locking up for PAL users. If you are using HDMI output, set the resolution to 1080i or 1080p (anything but 720p).
When I first heard about this I thought Microsoft was at it again but the issues are minor and were part of the original titles. It would have been great if the glitches were fixed since glitches, no matter how they originated are still not OK. If I wanted to play the first Super Mario Bros I would never be willing to blow into my console to make the game work again.
