Opinion: Mira and her tonberries are dead ringers for Etna and her prinnies

by Jenni Lada on Jul 22, 2009 at 09:18 AM

As I began playing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life as a Darklord, I was faced with an overwhelming sense of deja-vu. Not from the gameplay. No, the way the tower defense title is executed is quite original and refreshing. It was the characters.

The bratty, teenage girl with delusions of grandeur and the cute, unassuming monster minions seemed familiar somehow. After I finished the tutorial, it hit me. Mira and her tonberry servants seemed eerily similar to Etna and her prinny servants, from NIS’ Disgaea and Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? games.

Mira & Etna

First of all, Mira and Etna both have a similar mindset. Etna wants to be an overlord, doing pretty much anything to accomplish that goal, and Mira wants to be a darklord, again, doing whatever’s necessary. They’re both selfish, bratty, with entitlement issues and a killer temper.

They even share some of the same physical features. Or at the very least, a similar sense of fashion. Both girls favor black goth-style outfits. (Well, half of Mira does.) Both characters also look like teenage girls, despite Etna’s true age. The similarities are really quite striking.

Tonberries & Prinnies

It’s Mira and Etna’s servants that have the most in common. First of all, both tonberries and prinnies have unassuming appearances. You’d never expect that tonberries would be one of the deadliest monsters in the Final Fantasy series, and no one’d think Prinnies would explode when thrown. Both species also have unparalleled experience with daggers, and a strange, vacant sort of stare.

Tonberries and prinnies personalities are also quite similar, well, in regards to My Life as a Darklord when it comes to tonberries. The tonberries take all of Mira’s abuse and gladly do anything she asks, doting on her endlessly. The instruction manual suggests that they’re doing so to build up their “Everybody’s Grudge” attack. The prinnies are the same way, doing everything they can to serve and please Etna, though they’re doing it because they’re in a purgatory-state, serving her as penance for past actions.

In closing, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles My Life as a Darklord is a wonderful game. Yes, the characters are quite similar to ones appearing in NIS series, but it’s still worth buying, playing and enjoying.
