NPD’s US videogames sales report for May 2007

Nintendo takes four of the top five spots in NPD Group’s May 2007 sales report, the with the top spot remaining Pokémon Diamond which sold more than 331.2 thousand units in the US. Activision’s Spider-Man 3 broke the streak to grab the number 3 slot and, with the help of Mario Party 8, break up the Diamond and Pearl Pokémon duo.

The DS tops the consoles sales this month, though it appears the PSP marketing helped it to beat the Xbox 360. Ranked US console sales for May 2007 were:

  1. Nintendo DS = 423,000
  2. Wii = 338,000
  3. PSP= 221,000
  4. Xbox 360 = 155,000        
  5. PS3 = 82,000

Also…

  • Total video games experienced a 49% increase in May2007 versus May 2006. May 2007’s sales reached $815.5 million.
  • Console hardware experienced the most growth (79% vs. May 2006) exceeding $221.4 million.
  • Portable hardware was up 45% to $97.9 million in May 2007.  Portable software was up 39% to more than $106.6 million in May 2007.
  • Year-to-date, video game sales reached $5 billion, a 47% increase compared to last year’s $3.4 billion.
