Call it the Wayward Quarterback Roster update for Madden NFL 10. First Michael Vick signs with the Philadelphia Eagles just in time to make the August 19, 2009, update. Then Brett Favre ended his sort of retirement to join the Minnesota Vikings. Favre became available for Vikings fan to throw touchdowns with (or for angry Packer fans to drive into the turf) August 19, 2009, as well.

This is just the sort of chaotic off-season and pre-season that downloadable roster updates were made for. The gun slinging QB received an 82 overall rating, higher than Vick but revealing that Favre is no longer considered one of the top 4-5 signal callers in the league. According to Madden ratings, it still makes him a better option than Tarvaris Jackson, who finished the season as the Vikings’ starter last year. Jackson currently stands at a 69 overall player rating. EA Sports adjusts the ratings as the season goes forward so Favre, Jackson or any other player who performs better or worse than expected will get their rating adjusted accordingly.

Madden faithful remember Favre was the cover boy for the 2009 edition of the game. He was retired at that time, seemingly immune to the much publicized “Madden curse.” Then he un-retired and Green Bay informed him his services were no longer required by that organization. Favre turned in a lackluster late season, leading superstitious types to believe the curse is alive and well. This year the curse will attempt to take down two athletes at once as Arizona wideout Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh corner back Troy Polamalu share the responsibilities as cover athlete.

Favre signed a two-year deal with the Vikings but, for Madden’s franchise mode to be totally accurate, he will have to retire six times between the end of the 2009 and beginning of the 2010 football season.
