With the release of Unreal Tournament 3 only two months away (November 2007 for PS3 and PC), fans of the series are itching to get their hands on any piece of playable code. Normally, a few months before a game’s launch, a demo is released to tease gamers, for fan feedback and help with testing. Epic Games’ VP, Mark Reign, has vetoed a UT3 demo for the PS3 before the game’s release although a PC demo will most certainly be available.
Reign blamed the lack of manpower for not releasing a PS3 demo of the game. It’s nothing new for Epic games, as he pointed out that a similar situation existed with Gears of War. He said that Microsoft had asked Epic for an early demo of GOW but bluntly told Microsoft that it could have either the game or the demo - not both - in a the same year. It seems like Microsoft did not have much of a choice.
Reign modestly called Epic a small company and expects the PC demo to double-up as a Beta version as well, allowing them to iron out any shortcomings in the game.
Reign’s contention that they don’t have enough resources to make a PS3 demo sounds plausible. If they are going to have a demo for the PC and plan to use it as a Beta, the PS3 version might be a bit inferior due to the lack of feedback a demo typically helps rectify. Let’s just hope Epic has enough resources to rigorously test the PS3 version on its own.
