Holy Guacamole - we all knew that Nintendo’s newest first party offering, Wii Sports Resort, was going to do well. But 500,000 copies in eight days? Especially when the game in question is really an excuse to launch the Wii Motion Plus add-on? Wow. According to 1Up, the figures translate to about one copy sold every 1.5 seconds. Wow again.
The game in question is a sequel to the Wii’s 2006 launch pack-in, Wii Sports. The title features 10 sports mini-games, including basketball, fencing and archery.
It looks like Nintendo has nothing to worry about in terms of growing the install base for MotionPlus (which allows for greater accuracy in the Wiimote), though they’re still splitting the Wii audience. Developers looking into making games for the new peripheral will still run the risk of cutting profits (if only half of your consumers can even play the thing, it stands to reason that fewer folks are in your potential audience). Still, the insane adoption rate will likely bolster confidence in MotionPlus - and of course, in the nigh-unstoppable Wii.
