Nintendo Downloads for September 14, 2009

Oscar in ToylandIt’s a particularly retro-fantastic week on Nintendo’s downloadable game services, with more toy-based titles and neon colors than you can shake an arcade joystick at. Since Nintendo opted not to put out its usual press release (usually with some inane attempt to eke out a “theme” from a disparate collection of games, I’m going to give it to you straight:

On WiiWare, we have Spaceball: Revolution (800 points) and Gameloft’s Texas Hold’em Poker (600 points), the first being a puzzler and the second being - you guessed it - a poker game. There’s also the goofy looking Mart Racer (a kart racer, go figure) that will set you back 800 Wii points.

On the Virtual Console, we have the awesome-sounding Kunio sensation Crash ‘n the Boys: Street Challenge - a sort of crazy olympics-style game. Here’s Nintendo Life’s slightly more accurate description: “is the fourth English Kunio game available for Virtual Console. You might think that you’re not familiar with the Kunio series at all, but the truth is that you most likely are - Other games in the series include River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball. This particular game is like a wacky version of the Olympics - Kunio (Called Crash in this game) and his friends compete against rival teams in a variety of crazy events, such as jumping over rooftops or a swimming race during which you’re allowed to beat each other up. Although it is somewhat of a button masher, it’s still quite fun to play, and definitely comes recommended.”

DSiWare is offering up art school lessons (sort of) in Art Academy: First Semester (800 points); with the platformer Oscar in Toyland (800 points) rounding out the possibilities.
