Nintendo confirms production of possible Wii follow-up
Nintendo is first out of the gate in announcing the successor to its current gen platform.
Even though the Wii continues to make more money than any man or machine can dare to count, Nintendo is looking into capturing the hearts and wallets of future consumers. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata spilled the beans by saying:
“The hardware team started work on the next thing as soon as they were done with their previous project, but what they think up doesn’t necessarily become a product. We only turn something into a product after it’s been thoroughly vetted inside the company. We’re not at a point where we can give specifics, but of course we’re working on it.”
Iwata also spoke on the topic of Wii peripherals. He said Nintendo has already announced or released most of its ideas as far as peripherals go. In the future Nintendo doesn’t intend to bring out many more add-ons after Wii Motion Plus and Wii Speak hits store shelves. Wii Motion Plus will add enhanced functionality to some Wii games, but there will be other games that will require the new controller to play. There is no solid price for the Wii Motion Plus controller yet but Iwata promises, “We’re going to try to offer it for as little as possible.”
Iwata seems focused on getting the Nintendo brand into every crack and crevasse in the known world. He realizes that some people have never had the pleasure of experiencing a videogame. After Nintendo has completed its mission in developed countries, it will then set its sights on underdeveloped countries. Iwata doesn’t believe that will be a cakewalk either. “We’ll have a whole new dimension of issues to tackle like pricing, quantity availability and regional adaptation. We’re not going to meet our goals that easily.”
