One of the biggest surprises at Nintendo’s E3 2008 press event was the announcement of a Grand Theft Auto game on the Nintendo DS. Surely an attempt to keep hardcore gamers happy (and sway them from thinking of the DS as a kiddie handheld), Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is coming to the system this fall. The game is set in a “modern day Liberty City” and is development by Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar North.

From the press release:

“Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an entirely original entry into the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto series, and brings a new level of interactivity to its sprawling open environments. With the use of the DS touch screen, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise.”

Though we know relatively little about the game, this does mark the very first time the franchise has come to a Nintendo system. So while you’ll never see Mario shooting a hooker (to borrow a famous quote) you can still do it on your DS. I’m curious to see how this news blows over with the roiling sea of the internet.
