National Geographic explores the video game landscape

by Jason Townsend-Rogers on Nov 19, 2008 at 07:48 PM

national geographic logoNational Geographic, the media company known primarily for their magazines and documentaries profiling nature and the environment, have decided to enter the video game market.

The media organization has already formed a game division, National Geographic Games, with a goal to provide “entertainment with substance.” Thus far, the company has produced Herod’s Lost Tomb for the iPhone and Namco Bandai’s National Geographic: Panda for the DS.

National Geographic Games has announced its intent to work with Sony on National Geographic: Africa, along with Rain Forests and Greencity.

It remains to be seen whether or not these games will survive in the harsh video game jungle. It is hoped that they will, otherwise the only games that will function as a means of “education” will be Nintendo’s Brain Training series.
I can imagine that this organization saw the profit potential of the gaming medium, further proven by its success despite the harsh economic climate, and thus decided to see if they could stake a claim.

While I do not fault them for this decision, I have a hard time remembering the last recent time that I was entertained by a game which placed education as its primary goal.
