Muramasa: The Demon Blade changes hands

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

If you were worried about Muramasa: The Demon Blade after hearing that Vanillaware’s game was no longer going to published by XSEED, worry no longer. It turns out that the game’s US release hasn’t been axed. Marvelous is just working with another publisher.

The game has changed hands and been added to Ignition Entertainment’s stable of games. As Joystiq reports, the game doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but it should be in North American stores sometime in September 2009.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade‘s gameplay should be familiar to those who have played other Vanillaware games like Odin Sphere and Princess Crown. It’s a side-scrolling, hack-and-slash game that can have RPG elements. Depending on which game mode you select (Carnage or Unmatched), the focus of the game will be on the hack-and-slash action or on the RPG-style building of the character through battles. An Insane Death play mode can be unlocked, and plays similarly to Unmatched. The only difference is, Insane Death mode characters will die if they are hit by an enemy.

Let’s take a brief look at the Japanese trailer from GameTrailers:

Muramasa: The Demon Blade follows the adventures of two ninja sometime between 1680 and 1709, when Shogun Tsunayoshi ruled Japan. Players journey across Honshu, with the ninja Kisuke traveling to the West and the kunoichi Momohime traveling to the East, through multiple stages. Kisuke is searching for a katana, and quite possibly his lost memories as well. Momohime is a former princess, searching for a means to expel the swordsman’s spirit that has possessed her.

I can’t wait to see and play Muramasa: The Demon Blades. Vanillaware makes incredibly gorgeous games, and it’s wonderful to see another one make it outside Japan. I suppose this means I have to finally beat Odin Sphere before Muramasa is released here.

Oh, wow! I’m really digging the character art and animation. I just hope that its difficulty doesn’t rival that of Prinny….that was some hard, hard stuff. As always, I’m a little concerned with how the controls will work since this is a Wii game. My arm tends to lose all feeling once the blood has been drained from it after suspending it for extended amounts of time :P

I’ve been following it for a while, and no worries. There are multiple control schemes, including GameCube control pad options. :D

I’m really psyched about this game as well! I loved Princess Crown and Odin Sphere, so I know this game will be fantastic.
