According to a chart by Mobclix, there are currently 13,117 games available, comprising 20.7% of the total available apps. Approximately 73% (9500) of those are paid while 27% (3500) are free. The biggest category of games is Puzzles at 16.4% (4200) of all avaialble games followed by Action and Arcade at 11.2% each (2900).
By IndustryGamers’ calculations, the number of games available through the App Store has doubled since March 2009. At that rate, there could be 30,000 to 40,000 games available by the end of the year (2009).
With more than a billion downloads it’s certainly understandable that so many games are available. Both big game makers and independent developers are attracted to the App Store’s relatively quick and inexpensive production and distribution, although it also means a lot of similar apps.
