Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat, and Jimmy Palmiotti, a DC Comics’ writer, held a panel discussion July 26, 2008, at Comic-Con 2008, where they discussed Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe and revealed more about the game.

At the con they said that this game will be a very unique experience for fans of both DC and Mortal Kombat which will allow you to see just what it would be like to fight Sub-Zero as Batman.

“For every [Mortal Kombat] game we do, we like to add something dramatic, something fresh,” Boon said about the new game. The elements he is most excited about are the new “kombat” modes added to the game: close combat and free fall. Close combat is (as the name suggests) a close-up action sequence where the initiator attacks while the opponent defends. The initiator wants to get in as many combo hits as he can before the mode is over. In free fall, An opponent throws the other off the side of a platform to initiate freefall mode, in this mode both players will get to fight each other while falling to the ground. The goal is get as many hits in as possible before hitting the ground. Each character will also have their own special move to finish off their opponent, but it will also end the mode (and possible loss of combo points). No matter how many hits you give, only the character that ends up on top when you reach the ground gets the points.

The story mode looks very promising as well. Each side will have its own story that will explain why these two worlds collided, so you won’t be sitting and wondering why Superman is fighting Sonya. You can also switch between characters in story mode, so you aren’t one character the whole time. The levels also allow you to blast through walls and destroy scenery to get to your opponent. One of the cooler features of the game is the visible damage characters will take during the fights. As a character gets hit, you will see his or her costume and clothes ripping and you will see visible bruising and damage taken.

When asked why the game got a Teen rating, when typically MK games are Mature, Palmiotti responded, “I don’t want to see someone rip Batman’s head off.” in other words, since DC is being invited into the mix, he wants a wider range of players to be able to enjoy it without being worried about the brutality of the previous games. Don’t let the Teen rating intimidate you! This game still offers plenty of action and violence. There will still be fatalities for the MK characters and DC villains but the DC heroes will have new finishers called “brutalities” which won’t be as severe yet still fun to watch.

Because the creators want this game to be new and unique, you won’t see any mini-games or Konquest modes like in other MK games. There will however, be plenty of unlockables. Also both the Xbox 360 and PS3 version will contain the same material, no console specific characters.

The game will feature a large roster of characters from both DC and MK, all with at least three signature moves. Each character will be evenly matched, so you won’t feel the need to play as Superman the entire time. A list of confirmed characters (as said at Comic-Con) include; Batman, Superman, Flash, Shang Sung, Subzero, Scorpion, Sonya, Cat Woman, Shazamm, Lu Kang, Joker, Kitana, Green Lantern, and Jax, with much more to come.

After seeing screen shots and videos from the game at the panel, this game definitely looks promising (and awesome).
