As the key person responsible for a slew of classic PC games including Black & White and Dungeon Keeper, Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has a unique insight into the PC game market that few others can match. With his recent focus on the highly anticipated Xbox 360 exclusive Fable II Molyneux told VideoGamer that he believes the PC game market is “in tatters,” pointing towards a limited selection of “high points” in the current line-up as the main cause.

“If you look at the gamer market on PC, I’ll be quite honest with you, it’s in tatters. There aren’t that many releases on PC. There are some high points like Crysis and what Blizzard is doing, but other than that you are restricted to The Sims and World of Warcraft, they seem to be dominating the PC side.”

Moylenux went on to talk about copy protection, specifically the massively-publicised limitations Electronic Arts has placed on Spore. While he suggested that the limit of three authorisations per game doesn’t sound “that bad,” he “understand[s] people being very upset” and clarified that he personally “hate[s] any copy protection.”

Since the interview’s publication, the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA) has responded to Molyneux’s claims, calling him “way off-base with his assessment of the PC gaming industry.” PCGA president Randy Stude goes on to suggest that the industry is in fact “stronger than ever,” with more than 10.7 billion made in revenue last year (2007).
