Mike Newell named director for Prince of Persia movie
Michael Bay is no longer directing the upcoming live-action film Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The reins of the project have been offered to Mike Newell who will meet with the Disney and project executives at the studio this week for negotiations.
Of course the film won’t be able to start casting for the production until after the upcoming actor’s strike next June (2008) is worked out. Jeffrey Nachmanoff who, along with Roland Emmerich, wrote the screenplay for the James Bond movie The Day After Tomorrow has already been penned to write along side game’s creator Jordan Mechner to write the Prince of Persia movie script.
Newell, well known for directing the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has been offered the job of directing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time a live-action feature based on the popular videogame by Jordan Mechner.
Mechner, a game designer, game programmer and movie director, created his first classic videogame hit in 1984 with Karateka! released for the Commodore 64, Famicom and the Nintendo Gameboy. He developed the first Prince of Persia game in 1989 which at the time was considered a leap forward in game animation and featured an unusual method of combat - sword fighting with the enemy versus firing projectiles to accomplish a mission along with intelligent puzzles and deadly traps throughout the game. This game also influenced many genre’s of game play.
As we wait to find out who will be cast into the role of the Prince, LatinoFilms, which is notorious for finding movie scripts, have some how acquired a copy of the Prince of Persia: Sand of Time film script. Basically the opening scene will be very similar to the opening scene of the game, which is no biggie to those who have already played the game. But, from looking at the opening scene script and actually playing the game myself on all three difficulty levels, there will be a lot of action throughout the film. I’d be disappointed if it was more of a love story than an action flick.
